There is a calming beauty in ordinary things. Like the morning sunlight hitting the walls, glinting off the sills and sending warm sunbeams into the corners of the room.
Or the ice hanging off the roof, dripping water frozen in time. Settled against the blue sky it almost becomes invisible.
Sun casting shadows on the wall making the house glow with warmth despite the cold outside. Winter light travels through prisms and expands into rainbows that shift and twist as the sun moves through the day.
When you were born, did anyone tell you that your life is art? Did they tell you that each breath makes you a living masterpiece? You are art, poetry on two feet.
The things you exeperience may make you feel like you need to curl into a ball, hide away and never open your heart again. What you go through in this human life may feel impossible and ugly.
But you are art, poetry on two feet.
Learning to tap into that well of creative inspiration in your heart will help your eyes see that there is always a little beauty to be found. Maybe not all the time, or everywhere, but the sound of rain on the roof and the color of the sky at twilight will help you move through troubled times. Look for the beauty. Let beauty keep your heart open. Let the poetry of your own heart keep you nourished in times of stress and overwhelm.
Fresh snow on a sunny day and a bar of chocolate will remind you that some things can still feel good.
The softness of sinking into your pillow after a long day can remind you that you are held. Let yourself rest on the earth and hold beauty in your pocket.
It is easy to lose ourselves in the sorrow and the pain - we're human after all - our brains like to remember the negative things.
That's why I look for poetry, I collect beauty in ordinary things. I capture and keep them with me like fireflies in a jar and they light up the way before me.
Before I go to bed, I like to write down three ordinary things in my journal. Just something that I noticed, something that stuck with me through the day. Like ice and sunlight, cups of tea littered around the house, the sound of children giggling. And then when I need extra comfort, or life feels inexplicably heavy, I can flip back through my journal and remind myself of all the simple, lovely things that follow me throughout this life, the things that don't really change that much, like the sun rising every morning.
What simple and lovely things are present for you today?
Where do you see poetry today?
My children giggling can pull me out of any fog. It truly is one of the most amazing and beautiful sounds.
I love how you write about the simple beauty that is around you! As you said, it is easy to focus on and remember the negative things. I keep hoping that focusing on the beauty, the magical and our loving connections makes life not only bearable but worth living.
The simple, lovely things present for me is the beauty of snow glistening in the sun with blue sky as a contrast.
